Attending a Christian Church Service

Here is a lookout of what you should know when attending a Christian Church Service for the first time.
Finnegan Pierson
Belief in God is a very personal thing, and many Christians like to go to church in order to show reverence and respect towards God, among other things.
Regardless of denomination with which you choose to affiliate, there are certain standards you should try to follow in order to show respect to God and His sacred meetinghouses. Even if you are not a Christian, but attending a Christian service with a friend or relative, here are some ways to show your respect for church service.

Dress for the Occasion

Church services are for people to go worship God. The buildings in which they do so are often considered sacred and special to both God and His followers.
While not an absolute requirement to dress formally for going to church, it is a sign of respect towards God or, at least, towards the people who choose to worship God by wearing clothes that are appropriate for the occasion.
Just like you would generally dress up to go to a high school dance or to go out to a nice dinner, you should also consider dressing up to go to church.
Men, women, and children all have their different styles and tastes while wearing clothes, so the best rule of thumb could be to wear something you would feel comfortable wearing to a job interview.
There is no need to only wear white or black, just like there is no need to always wear a suit, tie, or fancy dress. However, keeping your clothing simple and at least casual formal will get you a long way.
Additionally, it is okay to wear clothing that has patterns, just as long as it does not distract too much. This would include patterned ties, patterned dresses, or even patterned socks.
You should generally shy away from clothing that has graphics, however, as graphics tend to be a little distracting in comparison to patterns. Keeping your clothing as simple as possible could be the best scenario when dressing for church services.

Show Reverence Inside

Many people attend church to feel the spirit of God as well as pray to Him out of gratitude or need. It is important to show reverence and respect to them by keeping your voice down and try to avoid loud laughter or voices, unless you are in an appropriate setting.
You should try to use your loud voice while outside or in appropriate gatherings, like social hour or in between meetings. If you need to take a phone call in the middle of a service, simply excuse yourself and take the phone call outside.

Believing or Not, Show Respect

If you are attending a Christian church service because of a friend or family member, but you do not believe in God nor in the beliefs of the church which you are attending, please be considerate to people with their beliefs while in attendance.
The general suggestion is you should try and treat others the same way you would like to be treated. God and beliefs in His gospel are sacred and personal to those who believe, so it is important to show respect for their beliefs despite whether or not you agree.

Wrapping Up

As you have read, attending a Christian church service is a way of showing reverence and respect towards God and to Christian beliefs. For those of you who believe in God and are looking to go back to church, keep in mind the importance of showing respect through your actions and your clothing.
As for those of you who do not believe in God and are only attending because of friends or family, it is also important to show your respect towards your friends and family by acting and dressing appropriately. It is a right and a privilege to show mutual respect to each other, whether or not you believe in God or any one of the Christian denominations.
